In recent years, Europe has tightened restrictions on online speech. Centralized platforms like Twitter (X), Facebook, and Instagram often comply with these regulations by removing content, shadow-banning users, or suspending accounts.

If you want true digital freedom, decentralized social media is the way forward. One of the most promising solutions is Nostr, an open protocol that cannot be shut down, and Primal, a beautifully designed client that makes Nostr as easy to use as Twitter.

This guide will show you, step by step, how to get started with Nostr and Primal — even if you’re a complete beginner.

What is Nostr?

  • Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is a decentralized social networking protocol.
  • There are no central servers — instead, you connect to a network of independent relays.
  • Nobody can ban you, because your account is just a cryptographic key pair that you control.
  • Different apps (called clients) let you interact with Nostr. One of the best is Primal.

Step 1: Install Primal

Primal is a user-friendly Nostr client that looks and feels like Twitter.

Step 2: Create Your Nostr Account

Unlike Twitter, there are no usernames and passwords stored on a server. Instead, you own a public key and a private key:

  • Public Key (npub): This is like your Twitter handle. You share it with others so they can follow you.
  • Private Key (nsec): This is your password + identity. Never share it with anyone.

In Primal:

  1. Open the app or website.
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. The app will generate your keys.
  4. Write down your private key on paper or store it in a secure password manager.

⚠️ Important: If you lose your private key, you lose your account forever. If someone steals it, they can impersonate you.

Step 3: Set Up Your Profile

  1. Go to Settings > Profile.
  2. Add a name, bio, and profile picture.
  3. Your public key (npub…) will serve as your permanent identity.

You can also link your account to an NIP-05 identifier, which looks like an email (example: yourname@nostrplebs.com) and makes it easier for people to find you.

Step 4: Follow People and Join the Conversation

  • Use the Search bar in Primal to find accounts by npub or NIP-05.
  • Many freedom advocates, Bitcoiners, and censorship-resisting journalists are already on Nostr.
  • Posts (called notes) work like tweets. You can reply, repost, or “zap” (tip with Bitcoin’s Lightning Network).

Step 5: Secure Your Account

  • Always keep your private key offline.
  • Consider generating a new key for public use if you shared your first one carelessly.
  • Use trusted relays for better reliability. You can add relays in Settings > Relays.

Why Choose Nostr + Primal Over Twitter?

  • Censorship-resistant: No government or company can ban you.
  • Open-source: Transparent code, not controlled by a corporation.
  • Global: Relays exist worldwide, making it harder to block.
  • Community-driven: You choose the client, relays, and experience.

Final Thoughts

European censorship is only getting stricter, but freedom-loving people have alternatives. By using Nostr with Primal, you can reclaim your voice online, connect with like-minded communities, and ensure no one can silence you.
